One afternoon in mid-2005 I was planning to have some quality time with my 7 year old son when the phone rang. We jumped at the opportunity to enjoy a home cooked dinner (mum was overseas on business) and have a look at our friend's PC which had developed strange problems after a 'spyware removal tool' was installed, prompted by a popup advertisement.
Suffice it to say that we came home at 3AM in the morning, having made a clean install on a new hard drive of Windows 2000, upgraded it to Windows XP, installed Service Pack 2 and applied the latest security updates from Microsoft, transferred Firefox bookmarks and Thunderbird emails across the LAN and provided some friendly advice about the realities of personal computing to our friends, who are now even more devoted Mac users than before. You can guess how ecstatic I was to see the report from Associated Press how NY Attorney General sues Internet Marketer. I sincerely hope that we see more news like this. An attempt to combat the enemy can be found on my web page about spyware and how to prevent and remove it. |
